A frenum is a naturally occurring muscle attachment that usually is seen between the front teeth (either upper or lower) but can also occur under the tongue and in the cheeks. While normal, a frenum should never pull on the gum line or resulting gum recession may occur. Abnormal frenum's have also been linked to increased periodontal disease. If pulling is seen, Dr. Moffenbier may recommend a frenectomy.

A frenectomy is performed by surgically releasing the gum from the frenum. Occasionally, a new band of hard gum tissue is also added to re-establish an adequate amount of attached gum tissue. Frenectomies are usually performed under a local anesthetic.

Removing an abnormal frenum can help increase the stability of the teeth and gums, helping to improve not only the appearance of your smile but also the success of any orthodontic treatment.
